Warm weather can make open water look inviting, but it can be far more dangerous than it appears.
Many water-related incidents involving teenagers happen during spring and summer when young people are spending time with friends near rivers, lakes, canals and the coast. Even on hot days, open water can remain dangerously cold and hidden hazards below the surface can pose serious risks.
If you’re talking to a teenager this summer, encourage them to:
Never jump into unknown water
Stay with friends and look out for each other
Avoid dares and risky behaviour around water
Leave inflatables for the pool, not open water
Know how to call for help in an emergency
